Medical ultrasound scans

Home / Medical ultrasounds

Congratulations on your pregnancy! You are entering a special time that can also be quite exciting at times. Your health insurance company reimburses two ultrasounds as standard during pregnancy from the basic insurance. Your midwife or gynecologist may find it necessary to perform an additional ultrasound. For example, to check your baby’s growth or position. For medical ultrasounds, you are welcome at Het Echocentrum.

Medical Ultrasounds: What You Need to Know

A medical ultrasound scan is an essential examination during pregnancy, performed to monitor your baby’s health and development. This type of ultrasound is performed for a specific medical reason and offers important insights into your baby’s growth and well-being.

What Does a Medical Scan Check?

During a medical ultrasound scan, we check various aspects of your baby’s health:

  • Heartbeat: We check to see if your baby’s heart is beating as it should.
  • Growth: We check that your baby is developing appropriately and growing according to expected parameters.
  • Abnormalities: We actively search for possible structural abnormalities or other problems that require early detection.

Types of Scans: Internal and External

The way an ultrasound is performed depends on the length of your pregnancy and the specific purpose of the examination:

  • Internal ultrasound (vaginal): This method is often chosen during the early stages of pregnancy, usually up to about 10 weeks. It provides detailed images of the uterus and growing baby.
  • External ultrasound (through the abdominal wall): This method is more commonly used after 10 weeks of pregnancy and provides a clear view of the baby in the womb.

What You Can Expect

During the ultrasound, you can witness the examination. You get a chance to see your baby live on a screen. You will receive two black and white photos of the ultrasound so you can cherish this special moment.

Why Choose a Medical Scan?

Medical ultrasounds are crucial for timely detection of any complications and monitoring your baby’s healthy growth. Whether confirming a good heartbeat, checking growth, or ruling out abnormalities, these ultrasounds provide peace of mind and important information for you and your healthcare provider.

If your midwife or gynecologist refers you for an additional medical ultrasound, you will also be reimbursed by your health insurance company. Is there no medical indication but would you like to see your baby more often? Then consider a scan in 2D or 3D/4D.

Dating ultrasound scan

During this 2D ultrasound, we determine how long you are pregnant. We will also tell you when you are due. We perform the dating scan when you are 10-12 weeks pregnant.

13-week ultrasound

The 13-week ultrasound is a medical examination for physical abnormalities in your child.

This ultrasound is part of a scientific study you can participate in after you have had a counseling session with your midwife or gynecologist.

20-week ultrasound

At the 20-week ultrasound (SEO), we look for any structural (physical) abnormalities in your unborn baby. At this stage of the pregnancy, we can also determine the gender of your baby.

Viability ultrasound

If there are concerns in the first weeks of pregnancy or when you have had a miscarriage before, you can have a viability ultrasound. This 2D ultrasound is usually internal and takes place between the 7th and 10th week of your pregnancy.

Growth ultrasound

Sometimes it is necessary to do additional monitoring of your baby’s growth. During the growth ultrasound, we accurately measure your unborn baby. This ultrasound can take place from the 28th week of your pregnancy.

Placenta localisation

If it was determined at the 20-week ultrasound that the placenta is too low, we will check again after the 32th week of your pregnancy.

Position ultrasound

If in the course of your pregnancy there is any doubt about the position of your baby, we will do a positioning ultrasound after the 35th week. We then look at exactly how the baby is in your belly.
