How is your baby growing?

When you are pregnant, your belly starts to grow. And if you are a little further along in your pregnancy, you may already feel your baby moving. During the standard offered term ultrasound and the 20-week ultrasound, you have even been able to get a glimpse of your unborn child. It may happen that your midwife or gynecologist suspects that your baby is growing a little too fast or is just a growth retardation. If so, he or she will refer you for a growth ultrasound.

When do we perform a growth ultrasound scan?

The growth ultrasound is an external ultrasound and we can perform it from the 28th week of your pregnancy. When exactly? Your midwife or gynecologist will determine that. What do we look at during the growth ultrasound?

So at the growth ultrasound, we look at your baby’s growth. In addition to accurately measuring the head circumference, we also measure the abdominal circumference and the length of the bone in the thigh. We compare all these measurements to an average unborn baby, at the same gestational age. This way we can say something about your baby’s growth. At this ultrasound we also check how much amniotic fluid is in the uterus and we look at the placenta. With all this information, we get a good impression of growth. We only do growth monitoring at the request of your midwife or gynecologist.

Had a growth ultrasound. And then?

Fortunately, in most women who get a growth ultrasound, there is nothing wrong with the baby. Is there? Then your midwife or gynecologist will advise you further.

Will I be reimbursed for a growth ultrasound?

You don’t have to pay anything for the growth ultrasound because you only get this ultrasound if there is a medical indication. Your health insurance company will reimburse the cost of this ultrasound from basic insurance. However, you do need a referral. The growth ultrasound takes about 15 minutes and is done in 2D. Afterwards, you will receive two black and white photos from us to take home.
