Checking your baby’s position
Between the 32nd and 36th weeks of pregnancy, most babies naturally turn head down. This position is most ideal for the baby. By feeling your belly, your midwife or gynecologist can determine how your baby is lying. Sometimes during the course of your pregnancy there is some doubt about the position. If that’s the case, you’ll get a referral for a positioning ultrasound. Because before delivery we would like to know how your baby is lying.
When can the location ultrasound take place?
If your midwife or gynecologist has doubts about your baby’s position after an external examination, you might need a position ultrasound scan. This scan takes place after the 34th week of your pregnancy. We can usually see the position well with an external ultrasound.
What do we look at during the positioning ultrasound?
- your baby is growing well
- there is sufficient amniotic fluid in the uterus
What about cost and reimbursement?
You don’t have to pay anything for the location ultrasound. Because this is a medical ultrasound, your health insurance company will reimburse the cost from basic insurance. However, you do need a referral. The ultrasound takes about 15 minutes and is done in 2D. You will be given 2 black and white photos of your baby.
