How long have you been pregnant?

The dating scan is the first of the two medical ultrasounds you get when you are pregnant. During this ultrasound, the ultrasound technician accurately measures your unborn baby and calculates how long you have been pregnant. So you know exactly how old your child is. And we’ll also tell you when your due date is.

When do you get this dating scan?

The term ultrasound is an external ultrasound and takes place early in pregnancy. Usually when you are 10 – 12 weeks pregnant. Are you shorter pregnant? Then we opt for an internal ultrasound. To get a good picture during an internal ultrasound, it is important that your bladder is full.

What do we look at during the dating scan?

The main purpose of the term ultrasound is to determine exactly how long you are pregnant. But we obviously want to know more about your unborn child. During the term ultrasound we look at:

• Whether your baby’s heart is beating
• What the exact duration of your pregnancy is
• Whether you might be pregnant with multiple births
• Whether the pregnancy is located neatly in the uterus

What about cost and reimbursement?

You don’t have to pay anything for the dating scan. Because this is a medical ultrasound, your health insurance company will reimburse it from basic insurance. The dating scan takes about 15 minutes and is done in 2D. That is, you will be given two black and white photographs to take with you afterwards.
